Infinitely Variable Resistance: | The benefit of a water resistance rower is that it most closely simulates a boat moving through water. When rowing the resistance is due to the effect of fluid drag acting on the boat. Go faster, resistance increases. Go slower resistance decreases. Importantly, the user chooses; regardless of age, gender, size or fitness. The patented WaterFlywheel emulates this naturally self-paced benefit of rowing. This is a workout you can start benefitting from immediately, regardless of experience! |
Silent Flywheel: | Because the patented WaterFlywheel replicates the same physical dynamics as rowing, its operation is just as silent. When the handle is pulled, only the soothing sound of rushing water is heard. The frame also assists in dampening noise and vibration, making this one of the smoothest machines on the market. |
Balanced Tear-drop Handle: | The handle is made of aluminum for strength and lightness, with a tear-drop shape that fits comfortably into the palm of the hand to minimize wrist torque - a common cause of tendonitis. Because of its strength and lightness, the drive strap in Black Walnut (S4) is high-density polyester webbing, guided by nylon pulleys. The drive strap does not wear and is maintenance-free, requiring no messy lubrication. |
Ergonomically Contoured Seat: | Supported on all four corners and ergonomically designed to provide maximum comfort, the seat is incredibly stable, gliding smoothly on eight urethane wheels. |
Floating Heel-Rest Design: | The Rowing Machine's footboard incorporates the all-new Floating Heel-Rest design. The cup of the heel-rest follows the heel as it rises from the footboard providing stability and comfort from the beginning to end of each stroke. The heel-rest position is adjusted simply by pressing the central button to disengage the lock pins securing the footpads. |
Tank: | The tank is made from polycarbonate, one of the strongest plastics available. It is virtually indestructible. The tank is sealed and can be filled with municipal water via a small opening closed by a stopper. This water typically contains enough chlorine to remain clear for some time. After exposure to light, the chlorine will degrade and the chlorine tablets included free, should be added periodically. |
Dual Rails: | Dual rails are featured on all WaterRowers. While attractive, they are designed to absorb sound and vibration, making for a smooth and silent stroke. These rails are part of a frame that can support over 2,200lbs of weight! |
Spragg Clutch: | The key to the smooth stroke is its "spragg" clutch that engages instantaneously. Unlike other clutches that produce a jerky or jarring impact somewhere during the stroke, the spragg clutch has no lag in pickup, which means no lower back pain for you. |
DIMENSIONS: | 83"L x 22"W x 21"H |

Does this come with a workout dvd like on waterrower's site?
They used to offer workout DVDs but they were discontinued about 5 years ago. You do get free workouts on the Smart Row App but must purchase of the Smart Row Upgrade Kit. You can also get Group Fitness Classes with CityRow Go App (Monthly Fee) and the purchase of a WaterRower ComModule.

Is this suitable for someone 6' 4"?? 200 lbs??
Yes, absolutely. I am 6’4 and 220 and my wife is 5’2. it fits us both. Perfect for me. Excellent machine. Outstanding quality. Love it.
Answer #1 on February 27, 2015
Do I have to stain it or does it come pre-stained?
It comes pre-stained. The wood is American black walnut. Black Walnut may vary in color from a rich brown to purple-black. Each rowing machine has been hand finished with three coats of Danish Oil giving a deep lustre and warmth to the wood.
Answer #1 on August 17, 2020
It’s already stained. They include a small amount of oil, in case you need refresh the finish. I’ve had mine for 5 years, and haven’t needed to. But if you keep it outdoors, exposed to water, wind, and sun, you might need to treat it more frequently.
Answer #2 on August 17, 2020
Is the waterrower classic compatible with rowpro?
The RowPro software is exclusive to the Concept2 brand of rowing machines. Waterrower offers their own version of rowing software.
Answer #1 on December 29, 2017
Are the wheels non marking rubber - something like rollerblade wheels?
I took one and scrubbed as hard as I could on tile, oak and bamboo floors. Couldn’t make any marks. I don’t think they are rubber, I think they are some kind of polyurethane.
Answer #1 on March 22, 2016
Yes. The wheels don’t leave any marks. I have mine on a hardwood floor and there is no sign the WaterRower was there when I move it.
Answer #2 on March 22, 2016
I believe so. We use it on hardwood floors and have never had a problem. With that being said, we didnt move it all that often. Its a good rower though.
Answer #3 on March 22, 2016
Does sweat affect the wood over time; cosmetically or otherwise?
Keep it oiled and the sweat doesn’t affect it. It’s walnut – a very hard wood. Occasionally (quarterly, maybe) wipe it down with Danish oil and it will look new forever. Danish oil is cheap and readily available in hardware stores.
Answer #1 on April 15, 2020
We’ve had ours for four years, and it’s still beautiful. It comes with a little bit of oil to polish it, as needed. Water and sweat bead up on it. It just needs a bit dusting to stay clean.
Answer #2 on April 15, 2020
Is the resistance adjustable, can one manually lower or increase the resistance themselves?
The overall level of resistance can be adjusted by the level of the water in the tank up to about 1/2 of a tank according to the graduation marks on the side of the tank. Filling it more than that doesn’t really do anything for resistance and can cause leaking problems when it is stored in the upright position.
Realistically, for multiple users, it would be a pain to change the water levels between usages.
A better way to adjust resistance is by intensity.
Rowing is intensity based.
To row a boat faster, you row harder.
How does this relate to the rowing machine?
Let’s compare it to walking which is also intensity based.
Strolling, walking, brisk walking, jogging, running, sprinting are all easy to hard depending how much effort you are putting into it.
With rowing, how hard you drive with your legs, how hard you pull with your arms, that is what determines your intensity (Resistance).
Ever notice if you are rowing a boat or paddling a canoe or kayak, how hard it gets if you try to pull the paddle/oar faster through the water?
That’s how the resistance works on the Waterrower. Any more questions, feel free to contact us.

"This is easy to assemble, well packaged, and high quality. It is a classic design. The water creates a quiet, smooth tension for the workout. It has more of the feel and sound of rowing than any other indoor rower that I've tried. It is the next best thing to being out on the water."

"Exactly what I expected. Excellent design, materials, build and finish. I chose to apply a coat of danish oil (which was included in shipment) to each part as I assembled it. So, my assembly time took about 2 hrs. If I did the assembly without the oiling process, I estimate it would have taken me 30-45 minutes."

Well, from a physics perspective it has a vast array engineering properties. First of all it absorbs sound and vibration. So you can imagine that riding the Classic S4 is as smooth and quiet as it gets. Secondly, it’s malleable and a premium hardwood that lasts and lasts. Think dimensional stability, ultimate durability, and a long lasting stylish look.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Engineers basically set out to recreate or mimic rowing a boat upon water, so they needed to craft a machine that has no resistance limit. Water is amazing stuff! It’s an incredibly valuable tool to people training their bodies for performance or rehabilitation purposes. Rowing itself in terms of calories burned per hour is as effective as swimming laps or continuously jump roping (without the impact to the ankles).
The faster a boat moves across the water the more drag is accumulates. On the rower, the harder you push the harder it gets without having to set any dials or push any buttons. It’s pretty much exactly like pushing a boat forward through water using oars.
CONTEMPORARY CONSOLE FEATURES

Afterwards they can truly track their overall progress by using the AutoStore feature, or project into the future of their current workout using the AutoPreview function.

"Quick delivery. Brilliant packaging. Took 45 minutes “on” time to complete assembly. LOVE company’s customer service who gave me a call to help with one minor problem. The machine is a joy to use, a pleasure to hear the whooshing of the water &, of course, it looks like a work of art."
